Let’s Talk the Talk Some More

In my previous article of the much similar title, I discussed the don’ts of the conversational world. In this article, I shall be discussing some dos of the conversational world.

Here is a tiny list of things that you should do in order to have a pleasant conversation and leave good impressions on people.

  1. Use their name frequently during a conversation; makes them feel important. Also, touch their arm or hand during the conversation (not in a pervy way of course).
  2. Ask for their advice and opinions; makes them feel respected.
  3. Let them know you appreciate them or enjoyed your time with them.
  4. Smile. Smile genuinely. Don’t smile in a I’m-sucking-up-to-you way. First of all, it’s more obvious than you think and you look like a jerk (unless that is your intention). Smiling with your heart makes you easy on the eyes and helps you come off as amiable.
  5. Have a soft expression on your face and look genuinely interested.
  6. Nod and say hmm while they’re talking; makes them feel heard.
  7. Expose your palms and wrists to the other person. This subconsciously shows that you trust them.
  8. If you think the conversation has taken a dull turn, calmly change the subject and talk about something which interests the both of you.
  9. While talking to people, keep a calm and calculated tone. Speak in a firm and clear voice to let the other person know that you are consciously indulging in the conversation. This basically means that you’re not daydreaming or have zoned out.
  10. Choose topics accordingly. Use vocabulary, examples, and obviously LANGUAGE accordingly. If a group of multilingual people is gathered around you, choose the common language to communicate in. Otherwise it’s just plain rude.

We should mind our conversation habits since these are the main tools of our everyday communication.
