8 Ways to Fight Depression (Part 2)

So, let’s take a look at some other ways to fight depression other than the ones I mentioned before in my previous article (which you’ll know only if you’ve read it).

5. Stay physically healthy

Depression is a big thing for you to be dealing with alone. You absolutely do not need another health problem to add to your troubles. So, keep in mind that you stay healthy in other ways. Eat your veggies and fruits and stay hydrated to avoid headaches. Avoid fats and carbs which will give you other digestive issues and make you feel terrible as well. Avoid the sun and heat. Take walks or go for a run. Work out so your muscles don’t tense up in addition to your brain. Early to bed and early to rise, helps to keep your depression at bay (yes, I know it doesn’t rhyme but it’s definitely true). Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol as much as possible. They are only temporary fixes with very dark side effects down the line.

6. Set short-term goals

The best way to fight those feelings of guilt and worthlessness is to show yourself you can do it. No need to try to accomplish great things, just focus on the smaller things. Set some goals for yourself and when you achieve them, tell yourself ‘Huh, now who’s talking’. Basically, offer yourself affirmation. Your goals could be to cook something difficult, read a book, do a DIY project etc. The task doesn’t matter as long as you successfully complete it. The feeling of satisfaction is the same in quality, and it will restore your sense of pride and accomplishment. When you accomplish small things, you will automatically start going for the bigger things. Also, NEVER compare yourself to others. Everybody has had different lives, choices, opportunities and resources. It’s not fair for you to compare yourself to anyone.

7. Get around

Travel to a close by city or if you can, travel to a different country. A new lifestyle, culture and society can do wonders for your mind. You will be amazed at how tiny and meaningless your problems are compared to what people around the world have to face. If you can’t for any reason travel outside, just go around new neighborhoods of your city; places you haven’t ever been. Take new routes to your work. Go to a different gym or a new spa. New places and faces can have a good effect on you as your mind will have something else to think about.

8. Seek professional help

Avoid medicines and anti depressants as much as you can. Consult a psychiatrist and follow his advice and prescriptions. Be honest with your doctor about everything you have been feeling and experiencing so he can advise you accordingly. See if you can find and join support groups to fight depression and anxiety. Knowing that you’re not the only one facing this problem helps bring you some hope and motivation for your recovery.
