We are always in a position of power and influence whether you’re a teacher, a parent, a friend, a sibling or just a citizen. We exert influence in a way which is quite invisible to ourselves, but my god do we do. The world is changed one person at a time. Let’s bring consciousness to the way we influence people around us and become a good role model. Let’s look at some ways in which we can do that.
How to be a good role model:
- Follow your moral values. Make sure you’re being honest and fair in everything you attempt in life. Show togetherness and citizenship. Even a random stranger you meet on the street can be influenced if he sees you following the traffic rules or throwing your garbage in the bin. Small things count.
- Always stay optimistic and positive. No matter how hard the situation, stay positive. Don’t let negativity take a hold of you. It’s all downhill from there.
- Be the bigger person. Admit your mistakes even to your students or kids. This gives them the confidence to admit theirs too. Don’t let your ego get the better of you.
- Bring in the smiles and happiness. Throw around compliments. Don’t point out mistakes or faults in others and NEVER in public. Constructive criticism is always welcome. Buy gifts for people or cook for them. Share your things.
- Communicate and express yourself well. If you mean good, make sure it’s obvious. Listen! Express your concerns, love, happiness and respect. Emotions are useless and pointless if not shown.
- Be different. Don’t be afraid to like or dislike something, but make sure you do so in a non-offensive way. Be unique and be yourself. Have your personality quirks. Showcase your talents and skills. Don’t feel shy to show your support for causes or stand up for something.
- Offer help. No matter where you are, make yourself useful. People love a helping hand, so offer them yours. If you physically are unable to help with something, offer solutions.
Being a good role model ain’t easy work people. However, it is as fruitful as fruitful can get. It not only helps maintain your image and reputation, it increases your quality of life tenfold. The satisfaction it brings is all you’ll ever need. When you see the people around you following your examples, trust me, it’s indescribable. You feel as if you’ve have changed the world (which you have).
