Mid Year Self-Care Reflections of 2020

Self-care is the new cool thing to do. Acknowledging mental health is becoming less taboo overall. This is a huge win since we are experiencing what seems to be the worst year in our millennial lives. We are in the middle of a world-wide pandemic with civil unrest and misinformation galore. We are learning between things we can and can’t control and when to stay indoors and when to get out and march. Here are some of the reflections regarding self-care that I’ve learned so far this year.

  • Seek help when you see yourself struggling. It’s ok if you’re not able to handle a situation the same way everyone else is. Do what you need to do for yourself.
  • You don’t have to find the silver lining in every situation. Sometimes it’s ok to just mope.
  • Pushing yourself past the uncomfortable feeling of being vulnerable can have a huge pay off. Try it.
  • It is important to do your own research. You will feel more confident and comfortable in standing your ground.
  • Living through a historical moment doesn’t have to feel grandiose. You feel how you feel.
  • Don’t hide from the sun. Seek it out.
  • It’s okay to call someone up and say “I don’t feel well. Can I please talk to you?” They will understand.
  • Having a contest about who takes care of themselves the least is not cool. Try encouraging each other with self-care tips instead.
  • Snail mail and long emails are a nice way to get busy and have something to look forward to.
  • Giving someone else a thoughtful present is a source of great happiness and a gift unto oneself.
  • Adult sticker books are a thing. And they are very very relaxing.
  • While we celebrate individuality, in times of crisis it’s necessary to put aside selfish needs and focus on the safety of the community. It will feel good to be of use to others.
  • Give your surroundings a makeover as best you can. Use a different candle to change the scent. Switch the background image of your phone screen. Change the set up on your desk. Erase your YouTube history and recommendations. Start fresh.
  • Give yourself some free unproductive time, with no strings or guilt attached.
  • Remember that others can’t treat you the way you want to be treated. All you can do is treat them how you want to be treated.

You are in the middle of a global pandemic and you can’t hold yourself to the same standards as others or even yourself from the past. Practice-self care and take care of yourself and those around you. You’re doing great!
